The University of Houston, a designated Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), is among the top 100 colleges and universities conferring degrees to Hispanics. The rankings were released by The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education.
UH ranks among the top 25 colleges and universities granting undergraduate and graduate degrees to Hispanics and among the top 50 for enrolling Hispanic graduates and undergraduates. Additionally, the University ranks among the top 25 institutions for full-time, four-year undergraduate and graduate enrollment.
“As an Hispanic-Serving Institution, the University of Houston is committed to the success of our diverse population,” said UH President Renu Khator. “These rankings affirm our dedication to prepare students for a global marketplace by providing world-class faculty in nationally ranked programs.”
Data for the annual list is compiled from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and its Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS).
The list also ranked individual academic programs. The University ranked fifth in the category of Architecture and Related Services and sixth among Journalism programs (tied with New Mexico State University-Main Campus).
Additionally, the University of Houston-Downtown ranked 52 among the top 100 colleges and universities granting undergraduate and graduate degrees to Hispanics, and 68 among institutions enrolling Hispanics for full-time, four-year graduate and undergraduate studies. In the category of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the University of Houston-Downtown ranked eighth.
According to the magazine, HSIs represent more than 10 percent of nonprofit colleges and universities in the country, but serve 56 percent of all Hispanic students.
In 2012, UH was designated as an HSI by the U.S. Department of Education Office of Postsecondary Education. A university is designated as an HSI if its enrollment of full-time undergraduates is at least 25 percent Hispanic. The University of Houston is one of only three Tier One public research universities in the nation with this designation and the only such institution in Texas.
